Jakby się ktoś pytał, to ja prowadzę uczone wymiany korespondencji elektronicznej z moim personal tutor a jednocześnie profesorem od najtrudniejszego przedmiotu - Contemporary Economic Issues. Nie mogę się powstrzymać, przytoczę :P :

Dear Mr Shorey,
I'm still thinking about one of the questions from our last RQS on
education - the one that was asking why women's PIRR is higher for the
marginal student than in case of men. They way I was trying to approach it
is that apparently women's time preference is higher so they stop applying
at a higher PIRR than men - is that right? And if it is, why is that?
Women retire quicker than men, usually stop working when they have
children, earn less than men for the same jobs etc. Consequently, their
future income is lower than in case of men so they should value future
rewards higher and they should have a lower time preference, shouldn't
they? Or maybe their time preference is higher because they are more risk
averse and prefer current consumption to an investment in education? I can
think of a few more possible reasons but they seem to me of a minor
importance and generally I don't understand why is the situation like
that. Could you please explain it to me?
The other thing is that I didn't attend my tutorial last Tuesday. I was
feeling bad at that day and add insult to injury I cut myself quite badly
when I was preparing my breakfast so I couldn't come to my lectures in the
morning. I am really sorry about that and I wanted to ask for your
permission to come to the tutorial on Friday instead. I wouldn't like to
miss the class because I find them really helpful in terms of
understanding the material better. Would you mind if I come to the
tutorial on Friday?

John!!
You could argue that women's time preference is higher but it is not the most
obvious reason.
As you say 'women retire quicker than men, usually stop working when they have
children, earn less
than men for the same jobs etc. Consequently, their future income is lower than in
case of men so
they should value future rewards higher and they should have a lower time
preference'. But this gets
confused by the fact that most women form part of a household therefore their rtp is
determined by
joint future MUtility of income.
The main argument used concerns the wage differential. Generally the difference
between the wages
of men and women is MUCH smaller at higher educ levels (cos less LM discrimination,
less social
discrimination, less social pressures etc.) Therefore the income gain is much larger
for women (and
the FE loss smaller) than equal ability men.
Yes - come to the tutorial on Friday.

John (I can't help it, I just feel terrible addressing my tutor like that :),
Thank you for the answers.

Jak widzicie ciągle nie mogę się przekonać do mówienia do moich profesorów "heja, John" :P
Właśnie uczę się deprecjacji. Prezes stwierdził, że uczy się dużo i poczułam się winna, więc się rzuciłam do książek. No, najpierw to posprzątałam. I zjadłam jabłko. A potem chińską gruszkę z Bristolu. A potem... no, ale coś tam się pouczyłam :P
Idzie mi TV Andalucia. Telewizja internetowa, taki wynalazek. Ale jest do dupy, nie ma meczy siatkówki. Szlag mnie trafia, że cały czas wygrywają, ale ja nie mam jak oglądnąć!!!!!
