...ARE GOING EXTINCT AND IT'S ALL THEIR FAULT BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO REPRODUCE. People try to protect this species from disappearing from the face of the planet just because they look cute. Pandas would eventually 'kill' themselves on their own, in their natural habitats, even without human ingerention into their environment. That's the whole story. They're just too lazy to live on Earth. And the question is: should we still conserve the species that are no longer able to sustain their lives and are going extinct on their own? That was the talk about biodiversity for today. I guess my university work makes me think deeper about some issues now. And I'm really glad for that and the input professors give into the subject of Geography. It is indeed very broad topic, starting with things like saving pandas and ending on Marxism, planning of suburbian neighbourhoods in US in 1960s and homelessness in London. Yep, that's (among many other things) what I've been learning about those last four weeks ;D
Satuday a week ago. Getting to Shooters Hill in Greenwich was a bit of a challenge, I must admit. I'm just glad thet Elle is a fantastic person and helped me a lot during my journey. I had no idea that I can travel by bus with my Oyster card, it's brilliant. Of course I sat upstairs, it was a LONDON BUS, do you think I wouldn't seize my chance to have some fun even before I got to my destination? ;D Besides, I had a good view on the whole street and could easily spot the bus stops (along with their names because my glasses still kinda work, even though they could do better. Yeah. I need stronger ones.) which helped with identifying when I should get off the bus. Oh, yeah, I totally forgot: you have no idea why I was going to Greenwich in the first place xD I was invited for a Disney-movie-watching, ice-cream-eating night. At Elle's place. The photo above is from that event. Eating hawaiian pizza, watching Mulan and Tangled, getting to know Dr. Horrible and talking about all the geeky things was fun, really. Especially staying up all night and in the wee hours of morning singing good ol' rock songs with Jake and Cissy. And watching 'The Blues Brothers' from 7AM to simply stay awake. There is one thing Jake made that I think I won't be able to express my gratitude for: he sang all the songs from the movie. Just like dad always did. I felt safe and really at home during those two hours. I came back home around 10, made myself some breakfast, went on facebook to check if anyone has written something and found about three messages from people who were at Elle's that night. Apart from that I've widely announced that I've been awake for more than 24 hours and didn't plan on going to sleep soon. I think I've crashed around 4PM and woke up four hours later. And went back to sleep past 11. It was a really crazy day. Weekend. Something that has to do with time.
On Monday I was supposed to go to the M&A society screening but I just didn't feel like going. So instead I stayed at home and had a little chat with Sherlock on Skype :] Since Tuesdays are my days off I've went to Shooters Hill to keep Jake company. Connor was home as well, but he stayed in his room for most of the time I was there. It was all good even though we didn't talk too much. And I finally know what 'Goldeneye' is about xD I had to head back home around 3 to be in time at ULU (University of London [students'] Union) for a capoeira training. And here I thought that my legs were adjusted to this type of exercise... Apparently they weren't and I was walking on LITERALLY jelly legs for the rest of the week. Going up and down the strairs was a real pain in the ass, I tell you. Maybe this was the reason why during the following days I have been pretty lazy, stayed in bed for as long as possible, didn't go out too much, lived on toasts and warm tea. The only time I went out not to uni was on Sunday. Sasu&Crew took me to Camden Town in the morning and MAN IS IT A FANTASTIC PLACE. Now I know where to look for a new bag that would become a part of me just like my Pink one did. And where to get many other bizarre and interesting things. Yep. I am definitely buying myself some cool stuff once I'll have money and my own room here to put it in. My guys were going to Zetsubou's place for drinks but I had to go to Guy's campus for GeekSoc boardgames, I promised Anna to be there. Oh, I didn't mention Anna before, did I? I think I can call her a friend now. We're together on Geography course. And only on Thursday, three weeks after I've met her, had I found out that SHE WATCHES SUPERNATURAL. And she has just seen the finale of the fifth season. I am stuck just a few episodes behind her. Oh my Chuck. We started fangirling right before the start of the lecture. And this weekend her parents are bringing her three DVDs. Yeah, you guessed right - three seasons of SPN are on them, 6th, 7th and 8th. We are SO gonna watch this together. And since she doesn't belong to any societies I've decided to drag her into GeekSoc, starting with the boardgames on Sunday. I think we were both terrible at what we were playing but it was fun nonetheless xD 'The Resistance' if you're curious. I had to go back home before everyone else, I still had half of my first essay for tutorials to write. I made it in time but I must admit that it's not the best I could do. At least I know that I have to start working on the next assignment a little bit earlier than two days before the deadline. Which means that I should probably start working on it already, I have two works to deliver before 4th of November and another one that is due on 11th. If I won't go to the London Comic Con next weekend I will sit down and write those essays, I swear.
Back to the topic. I didn't show up for yet another M&A screening last Monday, deadlines for books from the library are killing me. But I'm not gonna complain, they all are interesting and I know that at least I am learning something while reading them (which I can't say about the Sabriel fanfiction I've read two days ago). Although I think I'd prefer more books on biodiversity, like Gaston and Spicer's 'Biodiversity: An Introduction' instead of Marx's 'The Communist Manifesto'. Oh well, I guess I have to bear with the human part of geography this year.
Tuesday: another visit at Elle's place which I think I should start calling Jake's place since two out of three times I've been there I was meeting him, not her. They live at Shooters Hill together with Connor. Anyway, I've brought pancakes as a peace offering because I've made too much of them a day before - I needed to get rid of half a litre of milk before it got sour. Together with Jake I've watched 'Hot Fuzz' and I must say that it was fucking ridiculous at times and left me with a slight mindfuck at others. I must see it again, with Akira and Etbasz. After all we've seen 'Shaun of the Dead' together, might watch the whole trilogy together as well ;] Moving on: I've never thought that I will have a psychological crisis while playing THIS game. What too much information and writing an essay about biodiversity can do to you... I really felt bad for playing it, I guess that's what Castiel felt at some point when he rebelled againt Heaven. Maybe that's a little exaggeration, but otherwise the metaphor fits. Oh, I totally forgot: before going to Greenwich I went to King's for a seminar that is part of the Intrepid Explorers series. It was quite interesting and I wish that I've went on the previous ones too. You never know when the knowledge you get from PhD students about fieldwork can be useful...
On Wednesday I've finally went to the freshers' RPG games organised by GeekSoc. Yay for being a part of the team whose mission is to find out why there is no contact with the island where they breed dinosaurs for the Jurrasic Park :D I had no idea that a game like that can be so much fun.
OK, I'm gonna end this note now and write everything else in the next one. Hopefully I won't get interrupted and will post it before the midnight local time. And here I thought that I will read 'Key Concepts in Geography' today... No such luck.
See ya in the next note ;]
